Love this grinder
Love this grinder. Relatively quiet, love the holder, works flawlessly. I’ve paid twice as much for grinders that never delivered as they promised and always clogged

Would buy this machine over any I’ve tried
I’ve been a barista for Starbucks for 8 years. And wanted a machine that would produce. Great Latte. And I wanted it to quick and easy like the machines at work... I was totally impressed and LOVE this machine. The size, and quality. Everyone who loves a good Latte should get this machine... if my husband can make a latte on this first attempt. That says a lot...

Really Well Made
My husband and I faithfully used our old Cuisinart basic bean grinder almost every day for 14 years before it finally died. It was loud and really did a terrible job of grinding all of the beans well (it would leave a find power dust on the sides, but we just overlooked it). When it was time to replace it, we thought about just getting the same one, but after a bit of research, decided to drop the money on a better grinder since we use it every day and really enjoy a good cup of coffee. I couldn't believe the difference! It is remarkably quiet, doesn't act like it is trying hard, and produces perfectly fluffy ground beans that all come out of the dish when dumping it in my filter basket. I am not into the fine tuning details that this machine is capable of doing, but I imagine it really allows those people who care about that kind of stuff some great flexibility. I anticipate this will last for quite some time. It is fairly heavy and seems very solid.

Works fine -- strange controls
Mechanically, this expensive device works with no apparent problems. Easy to use, performs as expected, quality seems solid. The controls give good options for adjusting grind and quantity and output seems consistent. It make a certain kind of sense that the "grinding time" control is linked to the "quantity" control, but it's not clear to me why, or by what kind of calculation. My main use is to drop some small amount of beans into the hopper for immediate grinding. I'm not the kind who puts a pound of one variety in the hopper and uses it for a week. So, the "quantity" for me is "grind until it's all done" each batch. I change beans and style (espresso, drip, Aeropress) with each cup, so pre-programming isn't useful for me. As a high quality, very adjustable grinder, this device seems to work fine. (Especially nice that the collection cup seems to be almost free of static cling...) Only wish there were a bean scale incorporated, because I'm just eyeballing the handful I drop into the hopper each time.

Perfect lattes
I am so glad I finally broke down and got a decent grinder. I make a latte for myself every morning. After a little bit of experimenting I now have the perfect grind every morning. Grinding directly into the filter basket has eliminated a lot of mess and over/under grinding the proper amount each morning. The bean container up top has also eliminated the need for pouring out of a bag each morning and spilling the beans all over the place.

Rock solid
It's rock solid so far. I've made some delicious French press coffee with it. I tried only once for drip coffee and wasn't as good as French press.

Can you buy spare parts, such as the bean hopper?
A shopper on Mar 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes. Spare parts are available through Breville.
What is the difference between the Smart grinder and the Smart grinder pro?
Jeanelle V on Oct 27, 2015
Breville Smart Grinder Pro
Breville Smart Grinder Pro
Breville Smart Grinder
Breville Smart Grinder
BEST ANSWER: There are a bunch of differences, mainly geared towards fine-tuning your grind. You can find a full comparison between the two on breville's website but I got denied when I tried to link it in here.

The important stuff:
-more granular control of fineness vs. coarseness (60 settings vs. 25)
-you can set the dose timer in .2s increments instead of 1s
-has an activation switch that you can press with your portafilter
-upper burr is adjustable without using shims

If you're using it for espresso, the upgrade is definitely worth the money. Otherwise, you can probably skip it.
Please explain the functions of amount and amount adjustment buttons? Thank you
A shopper on Jul 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't use the grinder for espresso, so here is a drip coffee perspective.
The pre-set amount, displayed in the middle of the screen in cups, represents a standard coffee to water ratio. The button changes the cup total from 1 to 12 in increments of 1. So if you plan to brew 4 cups of coffee, you would press the button until it reads '4' and then the grinder will assume a certain amount of beans will be used. That's where the number on the left comes into play. This is the number of seconds that the grinder will run in order to grind the expected amount of beans. The duration of the grind depends on how fine the grind setting is, so the number of seconds will vary as the grind size is adjusted (it takes longer to grind 4 cups at a fine grind setting versus a coarse grind setting).
The knob below the duration allows for adjustment to the pre-set time. Certain beans or quantities may take less/more time to grind than the pre-set allows. Simply twist the knob to shorten or lengthen the time and start the grind to run for the new duration. Press and hold the knob for a couple seconds to establish a new pre-set duration based on your adjustment.
Keep in mind that a standard size 'cup' of coffee may not be anything like what you consider a cup. Standard is something like 5-6 oz. If your cups differ, or your coffee ratio (concentration) is weaker/stronger then you will make personal adjustments. I's easy to experiment and the original settings can be re-established if you want to start over.
All this is explained pretty well in the user guide. I've had the grinder for about 8 months and it has been terrific.
We seem to get a lot of static after grinding with other brands.
Will this grinder also create static?
A shopper on Nov 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It will at times due to several factors. All metal burr grinders will create some static leaving coffee dust on the inside of the container, especially a plastic one. I have been using different burr grinders for 15+ years. They all will do this to some degree. Factors include, how much oil is present in the bean and even the humidity that day. I find some beans don't produce static at all and I think the more often you clean the grinder burr wheel and whip out the container with a paper towel it helps, but I cant prove that is a solution.
Wish I could tell you this grinder id static. I will tell you I like this grinder. I has great features and very precise controls for different coffee applications. I grind everything from Drip to French Press and espresso weekly.. and can really fine tune to my preference. The ease of changing to a different bean and back is great since you can remove the hopper to be able to change beans with out having to turn the machine upside down like most grinders. . The only thing I had to learn is when grinding espresso I can only grind 3 shots at a time or the motor bogs down and stops. This really isn't an issue once I experience it. Also when cleaning the burr wheel, you have to break up all the bean pieces with the brush to be able to take the burr cylinder out. Again not a big deal.
Hope this helps.
