Description

Flaky fish, amazingly tender chicken, perfectly cooked steaks—Joule puts the wonderful results of sous-vide cooking into the smallest but most powerful tool of its kind. Designed by Seattle-based ChefSteps, a company on a mission to help people cook smarter, Joule is controlled with a feature-rich companion app that lets you pick the exact doneness you like for foolproof perfection every time. There’s no special equipment needed to use the Joule—you can use your favorite pots and pans, standard freezer bags and the Android or iOS smartphone you use every day.

At just 11 inches tall and 1.3 pounds, the Joule is so small it fits in your top drawer. Despite its small size, it boasts the fastest water heating capability on the market as well as hyper-exact temperature control—precise to 0.2°F. This speed and accuracy allow you to achieve amazing flavor and texture that’s impossible with other cooking styles. Thanks to its magnetic base and side clip, the Joule is compatible with any pot and works with a variety of water levels and volumes.

The free Joule app makes it easy to learn sous vide basics and more advanced techniques, too—so whether you’re an expert or a total newbie, you’ll have great success with the Joule from day one. You can even control the Joule with your voice using Amazon Alexa, which is perfect when your hands are busy kneading dough, dicing onions or tossing a salad. The Joule app keeps getting smarter, and is frequently updated with new groundbreaking features, including the following:
  • Visual Doneness lets you choose exactly how well-done you want your food then takes care of the rest
  • Visual Cook Progress lets you track the progress of the water heating and and how far along you are in your cook
  • Step-by-step recipe guides in convenient vertical-scroll format
  • Perfect-Until Tracker informs you how long your food can remain in water without affecting outcome, so you won’t need to rush to remove it

LOVE this! Best new gadget I’ve bought in the last 5 years! Well worth the $! App is super easy/straightforward too!
I absolutely LOVE this Joule! It is perfect in my tiny kitchen. It makes delicious, succulent chicken breasts. The only issue is having to wait to eat! Foolproof and the app is helpful and easy to use. Chef Steps adds new items all the time! Any sauce, pesto, spices will work.

I love it so far
I have had some success and some misses with it so far but it takes a little to get use to cooking this way, but I recommend this one over any other Sous Vide. The app really helps to guide on cooking temps and time.

Would recommend to anyone looking to buy

Back in the Kitchen
Curious but confused about sous vide, I asked the staff at the store. They enthusiastically recommended this model and explained how often they use it. I love it and am back in the kitchen confident that meat will be perfectly cooked and delicious. I like the app and especially like the optional videos.

Works as described
Made a nice thick porterhouse steak for my first try and it was easy and delicious. Just place the steak with some fresh herbs and olive oil in a ziplock freezer bag and you are good to go! The app on my phone controls it all.

First experience not so great.
I made chicken, and it was bland, and tasted like boiled chicken, even though I browned it.

Great results
Very convenient to use and control. Good recipes, easy instructions, yummy video snips. Sous vide may not be fast, but it certainly makes the best medium-rare steaks.

Where are the on device controls? I don't see where you can set & change the temperature it on the device.
A shopper on Apr 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: That's one of the best features of Joule, it is controlled by a smart phone app. Check out the app store for your smart phone to explore or download. Cheers!
What if I don't own a smart phone? That seems ridiculous to be forced to not only own one, but have to use it to operate; mistake right?
A shopper on Apr 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Howdy! There are other types of Sous Vide devices that dont require smart phone connectivity. Take a look at Sansaire or Anova, they both have manual controls.

How do you handle it when people want steak cooked differently? My wife prefers medium-well to well done but I like rare to medium-rare.
RICK C on May 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Though I have not tried it. I understand you can cook the medium-well steak first, and when it has reached temp, reset the temp on the Joule to to medium-rare. The medium-well steak will maintain it's temp, it will hold at medium-well. The other steak will cook to medium-rare. You can then finish both steaks off by searing them in a pan. The Joule app and their website answers so many questions. The ChefSteps website and the Joule community will help you with any questions you have.
Does it come with a case and clip?
RACHEL K on Jul 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is no case for the Joule but it does come with the metal clip as pictured. The bottom of the device is also magnetic and is surprisingly sturdy. So I have not needed the clip when I have been using the Joule with my Le Creuset cast iron ovens or metal stock pots. This clip will not work with a wide lipped pot or sous vide container. ChefSteps just recently came out with a larger extension clip that is available through their website for such purposes if you're needing a wider clip.
I am concerned about whether plastic bags contain BPA or other contaminants? Please advise
A shopper on Aug 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can also buy reusable silicone pouches that seal completely for higher temperature or longer immersion if you are concerned about the bags. Three are also other ways to cook other than just store bags- for instance glass canning jars or, for eggs, just drop them directly in the water. I understand that regular ziplock are fine for shorter or lower temp cooking (an hour or 2, or under 170F +/-).
Are you supposed to zip the plastic bags shut or leave them open and clip them to the side of the pot?
A shopper on Jun 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You are suppose to zip the plastic bag shut. That way water doesn't get in the bag and your food. You also don't have to clip it to the side of the pot. St our home, we use food saver bags which make things easier for us.
what kind of bags do you use for the food?
Patricia P on May 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would advise against "regular" ziploc bags. I have had my Joule for about 4 months and have had great success with Ziploc brand Freezer bags (both quart and gallon size) ... as regular strength or off brand bags are prone to fail during longer cook sessions. I have used the freezer bags for up to 6 hours at 167 F. and had no problems. Vacuum bags will hold up better for very long cooks (e.g. 12+ hours) ... and they can be used with a vacuum sealer or via the air displacement method if you don't have a sealer but must be careful to keep the unsealed end of the bag clipped up and out of the water.
Do you have to use plastic bags? Can you use glass containers?
A shopper on May 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can use things like mason jars and some other glass containers. The Joule website provides lots of information on compatible containers and how to use them under the Sous Vide tab.
Do you have to have internet access or wifi to run it? If you are in a location where there is no service, does it not work?
A shopper on Dec 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You need to have the Joule App installed in a smart phone. The Joule connects to the smart phone via Bluetooth. I hope this is helpful.
This is 220 volts?
Cecilia A on May 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is 100 to 120 V AC
Can I still use my phone if the app is monitoring the cooking?
A shopper on Oct 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: For sure. The app will run in the background. Just be sure to have your the app “background app refresh” turned on, so that you get your notifications. The app doesn’t seem to really be connected to your phone all the time, it just keeps a timer running and will send you messages when it’s almost done and done; every time you reopen the app it reconnects. Enjoy. The app keeps getting better and better with each update.
Will this work with an iPhone 7?
A shopper on Apr 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Works with an iPhone running IOS 9.0 or later, so if your operating system is version 9.0 or higher, it will work.
Can you use it with your iPad?
A shopper on Dec 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You need to have at least a bluetooth connection - both bluetooth AND WI-Fi is better. You should be able to download the app on your iPad - I have not tried it, but most apps work on both the iPhone and iPad. The advantage to using your phone is that you can monitor the device anywhere as long as it is connected to your internet.
If the blue tooth gets disconnected during operation does the shut off or keep running as if nothing changed?
A shopper on Sep 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, joule continues running to the programmed temperature even when blue tooth has disconnected.
Is it true that you must connect with the app through facebook? Thanks.
Valjeanne J on Sep 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, you do not have to connect through Facebook. You can connect via Bluetooth directly to the Joule or you can go through your home wi-fi router and then have control from anywhere you can get on to the network. If works exactly as advertised.
Can you cook potatoes and a vegetable in the same bag as your meat?
Gemma on Sep 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have cooked potatoes with my meat before but what I have found is that sometimes the potato gets overcooked. I now cook my vegetables in a separate bag.
What temperature ranges can you choose?
A shopper on Nov 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It depends on the “doneness” you want. Rare, medium-rare, etc. I love my Joule, it is so easy to prepare your food at just the right doneness. Especially like how chicken comes out, never dry and perfectly cooked every time. We used our Joule to fix filets (30 of them) for our long-time college friends and they all wanted to know how we made them so perfectly done. I know several couples went home and purchased a Joule.
Can you make a turkey with the sous vide?
Loucinda L on Nov 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have cooked a number of steaks and salmon, which all turned out great but have not tried a turkey. There is a good website called Chef Steps that works with the Joule and they have a good reference to cooking a turkey. Apologies, but I can't include the link here. Good Luck!
Cooking 6 lb prime rib. How long can it cook after donendess?
A shopper on Jul 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The Joule holds it at your perfect temperature so it doesn't cook further. You can wait several hours before removing it from the hot bath, but really, when it's done it should be removed pretty soon and seared for service or put the sealed hot bag into a cold water bath cooling down the temp quickly for refrigerator storage or freezing.
Is this Joule BPA free like the rose colored one?
A shopper on Nov 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don’t see how it would matter since it doesn’t come in contact with food at all. The food is within a sealed bag which can be your choice of a BPA product.
