Love this for grinding meat!
I have had the plastic grinder attachment since 1980. It was fine but it cracked in 2017. This is ever so much sturdier and has a larger tray for items to be ground. With 3 plates, it’s easier to get the perfect grind.

Amazing product!
this grinder is amazing! I was going to buy the plastic grinder but had second thoughts due to comments of it breaking so I bought this one, which is only sold on Sur La Table at the moment. I am so glad I did buy it! It is such good quality! very sturdy, good material and Works like a charm. It doesn´t make my KA work too hard which is a relief. I highly recommend this product.

An improvement over the plastic version.
After having used one of the old plastic versions, this was a significant improvement. The body of the grinder is not dishwasher rated (appears to be aluminum) that is not mentioned in the specifications. The auger and other grinding parts are stainless.
I have ground up to 5 # in a batch quickly and with no problem. There is always a residual bit of un-ground meat wrapped around the auger.
Have not used as a sausage stuffer.
A decent light duty grinder.

Kitchen aid grinder attachment
My wife has tried different techniques and cuts of meat, to no avail. Does not go through this grinder. Believe the bad reviews. For $100 this unit is not worth the aggravation.

Grinder Review
Have only used it once, but it did a great job grinding lamb and pork. The sausage attachments worked as advertised. It seems like a sturdy unit, I trust it will continue to perform.

Because it seems like every time I see the news, they are warning about food borne illnesses in ground meat. My husband has a heart condition that makes him VERY susceptible. If I grind it myself, a little less chance. Also, I never thought about grinding vegetables; I'm in.

What kind of metal is the food grinder made out of?
A shopper on Jul 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The hopper appears to be a food grade, heavy aluminum. The blades are steel, but I think they may be carbon steel, which if left wet, can rust. I've heard of people storing their grinder blades and plates in small bags of rice to absorb any undetected moisture and keep them from rusting. I don't know if this would be needed with this attachment, but it couldn't hurt.
Does this new model differ in performance from the older plastic model?
Virginia G on Aug 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It is faster, and has three (instead of two) grinding plates for greater versatility. Fine grinding plate is 3 mm

Medium grinding plate is 4.5 mm

Coarse grinding plate is 8 mm
Is the metal grinder compatible with the fruit and vegetable strainer?
A shopper on Jul 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, the plastic food grinder accessories are not compatible with the metal food grinder.
Can this be used to grind nuts into nut butter?
Sandy T on Aug 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: i personally have not done this, but reviewers on other websites said they have and that it worked well.
Is this metal stainless steel? I know that past Kitchen Aid attachments have lead in them. Is this metal lead free?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: There is no information that I could find that states what this is made of but it is definitely not stainless steel - a magnet does not cling to it and the metal parts seem to be made out of the same material as the flat beater attachment.

The manual does include two State of California Proposition 65 Warnings stating the product contains chemicals known in California to cause cancer and also birth defects or other reproductive harm. There are plastic and metal parts so I’m not sure one which has the offending chemical(s).
Is the auger metal or plastic? It's not shown in the pictures.
A shopper on Aug 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The augur [grind screw] is made from metal - aluminum, for most of it; and the round shaft supporting both the blade and grinding plate is stainless steel. Finally, a nice move on KA"s part; as otherwise the carbon steel blade and plate would wear-down any softer metal - such as aluminum.
Does it come with a plunger?
Madair on Dec 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The meat plunger is included. It’s on the picture. Its large enough to push any beef through nicely but one recommendation: take your time because the mixer does get strained a bit and I have the top model KitcheAid mixer with the strongest motor. Good luck!
Does anyone get metal shavings in their ground meats? This happened to us with our KA plastic meat grinder.. In addition to the metal shavings, lubricants we’re getting into the ground meats via the auger.
A shopper on Jan 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No metal shavings! When my wife and I first started looking at grinders, I read many reviews to stay away from anything plastic because of the same reason of plastic shavings. Because some meats are tougher than others or perhaps due to the amount a person may place to grind, it will strain the plastic grinder. There was a time where only plastic grinders were being sold for the Kitchenaid. We passed for a long time until we found the metal grinder at Sur la Table. I’ve used it to grind brisket, chuck, & turkey. It handles the stresses of all three with no straining. However, I don’t overload it because I don’t want to burn out our Kitchenaid. Good luck!
When making apple butter, does this separate the apple seeds from the pulp?
A shopper on Feb 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It is a wonderful attachment. I love it. But no, it separates nothing. If you put it in there, its going to grind it!
A shopper on Dec 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: My understanding is that the kitchenaid attachments fit all of the kitchenaid mixers. My kitchenaid is the 6qt. It is 47 years old and the attachment fit. I was shocked and happy about that. I suggest you ask your local surlatabke store if the attachment will fit the 3.5 qt mixer.
Does this fit the older models?
A shopper on Aug 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I tried it on my Kitchenaid that is from the early '80s & it works. Their basic design is tried and true, they haven't really changed it. They originally made these for industrial use (under the Hobart brand) and they look pretty much the same, just a LOT bigger. Have fun!
How does using the grinding attachment compare to using the Kitchen Aid mini blender for home grown tomatoes?
Barbara M on Apr 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Personally, my wife and I have not used it for tomatoes. We use it for grinding meats and let me say that it does a fabulous job. Burgers have never been tastier. However, my wife and I believe it would do a great job especially if you remove the seeds but you don’t have to. Keep in mind KitchenAid makes a fruit & vegetable strainer. But it’s plastic, neither my wife nor I trust plastic parts grinding anything at those loads. Check out YouTube. I’ve seen the tomato strainer.
Will it grind deer meat?
Linda M on Oct 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I hope so, but I'm sure it will. The grinder is all metal, very sturdy. I ground up a pork loin the other night, was very smooth operation. I'm very pleased with this grinder much better than the plastic ones Kitchenaid is selling.
Will this grinder chop raw cranberries? The plastic version did not.
Janelle B on Sep 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it does - and very nicely too!
What size in diameter are the tubes ?
Lonny S on Dec 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: That's a good question - based on what KitchenAid provides and the actual measurements. KA lists the two sizes as 9.5 & 19mm. The [outside diameter] measurements are: 9/16"-1" for the smaller tube & 29/32"-1-1/4" for the larger one. (The tubes are tapered). Hope this helps.
What is the diameter of the grinding plate?
A shopper on Dec 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The grinding disc is 60mm, slightly less than 2-3/8"
What is the diameter of the plate?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It's 2-1/8" in diameter.
