Terrible design.
Terrible design. The press vanes do not meet the plates well, and you end up with a gummy layer of product that completely blocks up the plates and prevents further milling through the plate holes. The only way I can achieve any kind of milling is to use a plastic scraper and forcefully continue scraping the plates in the cramped spaces between the bowl and vanes. Obviously, ridiculous. Smaller bowl as well. Especially at this price point, I would have expected a better mill.

Great for applesauce
This is a great food mill, effective and easy to use. I have been making applesauce at home for years -- it's much much better than any store bought. The way I do it requires a good mill: coring and quartering the apples and cooking them with the skin on, then using the food mill to separate out and discard the skin. No sugar is needs. The apples' natural sweetness does what's needed.

Best tool for making smootIh mashed potatoes or gnocchi!
I never thought I would need a food mill but for Thanksgiving I made these princess potatoes and needed one. Sur La Table came to the rescue and I picked this one up because the reviews were good. And wow - this food mill made the smoothest potatoes I've EVER had without being gummy. We have used it a few times since, even trying our hand at gnocchi!

It was well worth updating to this model
I had the old fashioned Foley mill, aluminum with the screw on scraper that our mothers used, but really disliked cleaning it and worried about food safety, so upgraded to the OXO food mill. I use it to process large amounts of applesauce each fall, cooking halved or quartered apples, skin, seeds and all. This mill produces a lovely sauce, while eliminating the core, seeds and skin, and I think I get more nutrients out of the whole fruit. Works fast and cleans up easily, and I love that it is stainless steel, that there is a choice of how fine to process the food, and that it all comes apart for cleaning. Yes, the bar across the top holding the "pusher" is a little awkward, and at the end I scrape off the remaining sauce from the bottom, but have to say I love this easy to store device with it's fold up legs.

Product needs tweaking
I have had an old food mill from my canning days that I've had for about 40 years. I needed an additional one and because of the reviews had no doubt that this was the one to buy. I have to say that I still LOVE my old one because it is SO SIMPLE! Old one has an open bowl that allows you to put food in much easier. OXO - bar across top makes it awkward and much harder to put in food, especially thick soup or potatoes. Old one - top screws in with wing nut so easier to turn and MUCH easier to clean. Advantage OXO - quality of the material used is excellent and I do have option of three blades, although I've had to change blades both times (learning process) and changing blades was a MESS! If they could eliminate center spring-loaded bar, use a locking system for blades, a wing nut to secure and a scraper bar underneath it would be perfect! I want one like that!!

How did I live without it?
This is the second food mill that I have purchased and while both of them were fantastic, my favorite is this one. You get three interchangeable disc's to allow more customization. The legs that fold in for storage and fold out for use are amazing. The legs provide a very stable base and the coating them effectively holds them in place. This alone makes it awesom

We have a bounty of Roma tomatoes out of the garden, and I want to make my own tomato sauce. As a child, I remember helping my mother make homemade tomato sauce, and she used a food mill. The consistency was much nicer than that of a food processor or blender.

will this strain blueberry seeds or strawberry seeds out for juice?
A shopper on Oct 10, 2013
BEST ANSWER: It will. This food mill comes with a fine, medium and coarse disc. As long as you use the fine disc, it should strain the seeds out
Where is this product manufactured?
A shopper on Sep 27, 2011
BEST ANSWER: OXO Good Grips food mill is the perfect tool for preparing fresh purees, sauces, soups and more. It has a stainless steel inner bowl that’s ideal for hot foods and will not stain. Made in China.
can I use the Oxo food mill to make nut butters from whole nuts?
Veronica P on Nov 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hi Veronica, I would recommend using a motorized vehicle for nut butters such as a Vitamix or similar brand. They work fast and provide a good product and are able to handle all sorts of tasks. A manual food mill is designed to mill partially or fully cooked foods to a fine consistency but not hard uncooked food such as nuts.
Does the mill come with an instruction book/recipe book?
A shopper on Aug 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You get a small pictorial instruction foldout that explains the use of each of the 3 inserts with different sized holes suggesting some of the foods they can mill. Also showis how to put together and clean. There are no recipes included, however. I use for milling roasted tomatoes, (seeds and skins), before making marinara sauce and cleaning seeds , remaining skin and core as well as attaining the smooth texture for gravenstein applesauce prior to freezing for the year.
French Style Fish Soup. This is made using a selection of various fish, both small and large, together with shell fish, veg and seasoning. Does the Oxo Food Mill sieve out the shell and bones ok?
A shopper on May 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't think this would be the best option for your soup such as "bouillabaisse" that may contain hard shells and pieces of fish and seafood you want to preserve for the finished soup.. This item is designed for straining and pressing soups like a butternut squash soup or clearing applesauce from skin and seeds leaving a smooth finished product. I would choose to use a "chin wah" or simply a "fine mesh colander" from your home appliances. You will then be able to press and drain the stock without breaking up the contents too much. Good Luck!

Does anyone know if any of the disks help with the elimination of tomato seeds? Thank you.
Linda L on Sep 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am pretty sure I use the finest one and still the seeds get through, which do not concern me much. I would think a fine sieve would do the trick but of course that would add another step.
Is a food mill a good tool for processing grapes from the skins and seeds?
A shopper on Aug 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: We haven't used it to do that, but since we do process small tomatoes with no problem separating skins and small seeds, we can't see why not. The OXO comes with three "blades" and we'd recommend using the one with the smallest openings - which should be small enough to prevent grape seeds from getting through. No guarantee, but worth a try - plus thefood mill is usefull for all sorts of other chores.
I have a cheaper food mill and it seems like little bits of metal come off of the center bolt as you turn it because I can see a gray/black spot in the middle of the food in the bowl when I'm done. Has anyone had that issue with this one?
A shopper on Nov 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have never had this happen with this wonderful food mill. Plus it is easier to turn than the cheaper version, which I used for many years. Additionally, it helps that the legs fit onto the top of a big bowl. Overall I find that this food mill is well worth the money. I use it primarily for applesauce, made with the skin on to add color and nutrients.
What disc do you use for applesauce?
A shopper on Sep 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I use whichever disc was on the food mill when I bought it. I never even worried about this, and I don't really think it matters. The main thing is using a food mill to make applesauce, which is much much better than any other way. Do not peel the apples. Just quarter and core them. Do not add sugar or anything else except maybe a little bit of water. Cook covered over a medium flame until they are all mushy. Then put them through the food mill, and viola! Applesauce can be frozen and still tastes as good.
